Rival - Retro Low
Rival - Retro Low [Director's Cut]
I directed this video for Rival on behalf of himself & Blizzard, who were producing an EP together.
I have always wanted to work with Blizzard, so this was a great opportunity to make a connection with the legendary Manchester Rapper & Producer!

To make this music video i rented a DIY Snorricam from a friend, and tested it all to make sure it gave the desired result.
I performed a test shoot
The original treatment for the music video had a slightly different tone, with the opening & closing shots instead being of an artist laying on the floor in a pool of their own blood.
The idea was to have the ending shown at the start, and then the rest of the music video be the day-long buildup to the artist eventually being stabbed by a friend ; finally laying in a pool of blood in the middle of a field.
I tried my hardest to get Rival to agree to this, but at the last minute, he decided against it.
He quite rightly pointed out the number of artists who had died in similar ways to their portrayals in music videos, so decided against doing it in the end.
I revised the concept at the last minute, and instead, brought a number of props to the shoot, and instead would have the artist chilling on the grass smoking. The video depicts an artist's daily life and homecomings.

A little-known fact about this music video is that me & Rival shot a 2nd music video, which unfortunately never got released. It was a concept video to the other single from the same release ; Retro High.
I don't think that will ever see the light of day, but oh well!
